Israel unleashes air strikes on Gaza
April 2nd 2010 02:36
Mirroring events in early 2009, Israeli F-16 fighter planes unleashed eight air strikes upon Gaza in response to increased Qassam rocket attacks out of Gaza that targeted southern Israeli communities.
Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, quoting the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), stated that the attacks were a preliminary response to an operation carried out in Khan Younis, a city and nearby refugee camp in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, that left two IDF soldiers dead and two wounded.
Three children, aged four, eleven, and a two-year old, were injured in the strikes by flying glass in the Sabra district said Moawiya Hassanein, head of the Palestinian emergency services in Gaza.
The IDF released a statement that the targets of the strikes were two weapons factories and two weapons depots situated in Gaza. Khan Younis received three of the strikes with the rest occurring in Gaza and other parts of the Gaza Strip. Other strikes were also carried out on the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza.
The air strikes carried out last night are the latest in a string of violence between Israel and Palestinian militants based in the Gaza Strip. The current level of violence is the highest since Operation Cast Lead - a three week operation carried out by Israel that targeted key Hamas military infrastructure and leaders in the final weeks of 2008. Over 1,000 Palestinians, including civilian women and children were killed in the assault.
