The Australian Republic 2008
April 24th 2008 05:33
In 1788 white Australia is founded, a convict colony of Britain, a stain on its empire. 220 years later we stand with a British head of state, a British symbol of oppression marks our flag. Our Parliament is sovereign, our cricket team is the best in the world and our trade with Britain is at an all time low.
What is the point? We are not BRITISH we are AUSTRALIAN, and it is impossible to be the two at the same time. To be Australian is to be Australian; it is a contradiction of your identity to be someone else. The two don't run hand in hand, our own assertion as an identity is necessary and inevitable. The cultural cringe that we suffer is not due to lack of culture or education or anything of that nature; it is because our own identity is locked up in someone else. We have nothing to be proud of or to call own as long as we remain a colonial outpost.
Picture America in your head; now picture a national patriotic/political figure that you associate with that country.
It would be a normal assumption that you came up with the President. He is an American.
Picture Australia in your head; now picture a national patriotic/political figure that you associate with our country.
What did you come up with? Was it the British queen? No, it wasn't. Was it the Australian prime minister? Almost definitely. We don't even acknowledge the Queen as a figure who we associate as part of our country, so why then is she the head of it?
When England won the Ashes back from Australia the Queen of England congratulated the players.
When Australia won the Ashes, the Queen of Australia said nothing.
Even the monarchy knows its not part of Australia.
In 1999 a vengeful PM changed the question for the republic from ‘do you want an Australian head of state’ to a much more scary question which made it seem like you wanted to change the entire constitution. This and the fact that the government of the time and PM opposed it was the reason for the ‘yes’ vote’s failure. The model proposed was minimalist and the idea was good, that model meant barely any conventions would have to be changed. But because of an idiot, dumb, cunning, evil bastard we are at risk of remaining British for another 220 years. The republic needs the PM’s and both major parties support, without this any referenda change is impossible, whether it is for the Republic or not. Mr. Rudd, acknowledge our country is not a colonial outpost and call another constitutional convention with all elected representatives and don’t stack it with monarchists like Mr Howard did; Mr. Rudd make us our own country and pave the way for our own Australia.
Our country will never be accepted as our own, as long as we remain a British isle, some may say we are not a British isle but as long as she is our head of state then by our own law we are. WE ARE NOT BRITISH, WE ARE AUSTRALIAN. The 2 contradict each other, we cannot be both.
WE NEED THE REPUBLIC OF AUSTRALIA.

Australia is rightfully the property of the native and non native Australians, not the British monarchy.

If people are afraid that mighty mean the goverment power will be far too centralize. We can always add an additional authority within the senate. "The goverment watch dog" is a system that have been function extremely well in East Asia democracy. And before democracy came into existence in Asia, "The GWD" played an important role in keeping the emperor to working in public interest.
Personally, I don't think we need an additional authority for our democracy, other then abolishing the position of goverment general. But if anybody feel we need an additional authority, just appoint a senator to be a "GWD" will be more then enough.
